Symptoms of Piles (Hemroids)

Fast cure

Hemorrhoids or piles affect at least 50% of the global population at some point in their lives. More likely than not, once experienced, it is a recurrent condition. At best an inconvenience, most occurrences are short lived and the symptoms of piles disappear untreated. But, there are serious cases requiring medication.

What exactly are piles, why do we get them, and what are the symptoms of piles?

The first symptoms of piles are usually an inflammation of the rectum. They are actually blood vessels that swell up, becoming tender and often painful.

Why do we get them? Several risk factors increase the chances of piles developing:

•    standing upright for protracted periods of time
•    prolonged periods of sitting
•    straining whilst passing stools
•    constipation
•    diarrhea
•    obesity
•    pregnancy
•    anal sex
•    poor diet (lack of fiber)
•    lack of exercise
•    genetics (possibly).

What are the symptoms of piles? There are two types of piles or hemorrhoids; internal and external.

Bleeding is the most common manifestation of internal hemorrhoids which have prolapsed, that is, they protrude through the anus. The symptoms of piles then include bright red blood coating expelled stools, in the toilet bowl and on used toilet paper.

Swellings or lumps of clotted blood are distinct symptoms of external piles. Known as thrombosed external hemorrhoids, they can be quite painful. Because these symptoms of piles can cause irritation or discomfort, it is common for the situation to be aggravated by excessive attempts at cleaning the area, leading to a vicious circle of recurrence.

Why is it important to recognize the symptoms of piles? Because piles are often mistaken for several other conditions like fissures (whereby the anoderm – the skin around the anus is damaged), fistulae (a tract that can develop between the anal canal and the opening to the outer skin of the rectum), abscesses or just plain itch due to a variety of other non-pile related causes. These other conditions usually require medical treatment.

Piles are normally very easily treated. They may go away on their own without medication. If you find that the piles keep recurring, immediately review your diet. Make sure to include plenty of fruit and more importantly fiber. It is also recommended to drink plenty of fluids, water being the best. An age old pediatrician’s remedy is prune juice. Works wonders in adults, not just the babies.

However, for the more persistent piles, there are plenty of OTC (over the counter) remedies and treatments that are available at the local drugstore, or online if you are easily embarrassed. If the symptoms of piles persist after self treatment, please see your doctor to ensure a correct diagnosis.
